Natural Reserve "Zingaro"
The Natural Reserve "Zingaro" was founded in 1981. It is the first protected area in Sicily. It is an oriented natural reserve to safeguard and preserve both the environment and the landscape .
The "Zingaro" is an expanse of coastline that reaches 913 mt. (Mount Speziale is the highest peak) and a spreads through a wonderful coastline from "Calamazzo di Sciacca",at the entrance of Scopello, to a part of the litoral between "Tonnarella dell'Uzzo" and "Calampiso" in the territory of S. Vito Lo Capo.

The "Zingaro" is the reign of peace and tranquillity.

The blooming of stories and tellings, both antique and recent, reveals how that strip of coastline, now famous, is "adorned" as well as with natural beauties, also by mysterious charm nourished over the years by adventurous episodes.

Surrounded on three sides by rocks, sheer above the sea, the valley of the "Zingaro" is a natural reserve accessible by few passages and only by man or mule.
This latency from the world, has contributed to maintaining this edge of the world - defined by the Naturalists "the most beautiful and solitary of Sicily"- untouched over the years .

None of the natural reserves of our country is so connected to the sea as the "Zingaro".

Here the sea is not only the geographical border, but the constant background of the natural landscape and indispensable element of the naturalistic aspects.

The search of sandy shores - which characterize most of the gulf - would be useless on this coast. All the coastal profile is an alternation of rock walls immersed in the blue, "the faraglioni", and small bays sloping towards the sea.

Going from S. Vito to Scopello you will find the following caves:
"Le Grotte di Mastro Peppe Siino", "La Grotta dell'Uzzo", "La Grotta del Sughero", "La Grotta di Punta del Leone", "La Grotta di Punta Capreria".
The most important is "La Grotta dell'Uzzo", where rests and evidence have been found.

This testifies the presence of man in these lands as far as twelve thousand years ago. One of the most interesting necropolis of Sicily has been found inside.

"Tonnarella dell'Uzzo", "Torre dell'Uzzo", "Cala Marinella", "Cala Beretta", "Cala della Disa", "Cala del Varo" (reachable only by boats without engines) and "Cala della Capreria" are but some of the many dovetails and seashores where it is possible to stop and have a nice and relaxing swim .
They normally are small white dovetails with pebbles and gravels.
